Tom Waite’s Character
Tom Waite’s Professionalism and Dedication
Tom Waite grew up in the world of dogs and the outdoors. His father raised and trained working (hunting) dogs for over 38 years, making dogs an important part of Tom’s entire life. When Tom was fifteen years old, he handled his first dog in a National Championship. At seventeen, Tom was being paid for his training and guiding services. Tom’s reputation as a top notch trainer helped him to pay for his undergraduate education at Vermilion College in Ely, Minnesota.
After completing his Master’s Degree in Wildlife and Biology at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point, Tom ran his own kennel on the Buena Vista Marsh in Wisconsin. Upon the death of his father, Tom moved his entire kennel and business to Southeast Wisconsin and into the kennel his father and godfather once owned. After five years, his business and the kennel grew to the point where either he needed to relocate to a bigger facility or undertake a complete renovation to enhance the existing kennel. The choice came rather easily when Tom discovered a stunning 114 acre piece of land only 10 miles from the original kennel. He built a beautiful facility complete with 60 runs with all the modern amenities. The property was further developed to include pristine training grounds and, in 2001, was established as the new home of Dale Creek Gundogs.
Tom has experience in field trials and hunt tests with retrievers and spaniels; horseback, walking, cover trials, field trials, hunt tests and NSTRA with pointers; field trials with hounds; competitive racing with sled dogs; hunt tests with terriers and a wealth of general dog obedience training and problem dog training.
In addition to his field work and training, Tom is an AKC licensed judge as well as a judge for AFTC field trials. Tom has conducted training seminars for various clubs in the United States and Europe, as well as various fairs and industry shows. Tom, or his dogs, have been featured in many national and local magazines and newspapers including the Wisconsin Outdoor Journal, Gundog Magazine, The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinal and Midwest Outdoors.
Tom currently breeds American Water Spaniels, English Setters, English Pointers and Labrador Retrievers. In addition, he works with or has worked with 15 different pointing breeds, 6 different retrieving breeds, 8 different Spaniel breeds, 7 different Hound breeds, and 3 different Terrier breeds for tests or trials. Tom also works with numerous other breeds and mixed breeds on obedience, problems and general hunting applications.
